Japan leads Asian pack at D&AD ahead of China and Singapore – other Asian countries disappoint
Japan has performed extremely well at D&AD this year, receiving five Nominations and 20 In Book, ranking the country first in Asia and fifth in the world – well ahead of China in 10th spot with one Nomination and 10 In Book, followed by Singapore with one Nomination and 7 In Book.
The rest of Asia had a very disappointing year (entries are down drastically from south-east Asia), no doubt because of the GFC, but some observers will believe it’s because of the tough anti-scam policy of D&AD this year. India only had four In Book, while Hong Kong and Malaysia only scored a single In Book each.
Increases from Asia:
Japan – up 1% in 2010. 2009 entries were up 14% on the previous year
India – up 1% in 2010. 2009 entries dropped 22% on 2008
The Philippines – up 104% in 2010. 48% drop in 2009
South Korea – 12% increase in 2010. 40% decrease in 2009.
Taiwan – 37% increase in 2010. 46% decrease in 2009.
Decreases:
The SEA countries listed below have been in decline for a while – we assume it’s related to the drop in traditional advertising entries.
Singapore 33% down
Malaysia – 45% down
Thailand – 39% down
China – 46% down
HK – 22% down
In the end, juries selected 560 entries to go into the D&ADAnnual. Of these, 135 entries have been nominated for a D&AD Pencil.
TheUK dominated of course (being D&AD with all juries dominated by UKcreatives) with a staggering 266 entries in the book – nearly half thetotal – of which 60 are Nominations. The USA has 79 entries In Book, ofwhich 24 are Nominations. Australia comes third, with a total of 37 InBook, of which 10 are Nominations. Germany came fourth with 31 In Bookof which 7 are Nominations; Japan came fifth, with 25 In Book of which5 are Nominations, followed by France with 20 In Book, of which 6 areNominations.
In-Book work is considered the best work of the year and equivalentto a bronze award. Nominated work is considered worthy of a YellowPencil and equivalent to a silver award.
The winners will be announced at the D&AD Awards Ceremony & Dinner on 3 June. Student Awards nominations will be announced the week commencing 11 May.

You cant begrudge the UK for having the most entries….after all, these guys sweat their nuts off to put out good and real work.
Isn’t Ben & Jerry’s campaign a scam?
A scam? Certainly not 10.05. Asia doesn’t create scams anymore. Have you not read that?
Ben & Jerrys was up on a couple of bus stops for maybe a month…..that lets it sneak in. Anyway it aint winning any big awards, just some craft nominations at best.
Ben and Jerry campaign is one of the best campaigns I’ve seen in years. Going to be a big winner in One show I believe…
