Young Lions Cyber.jpgChristine Lim and Joanna Ortega from DDB Singapore have clinched the country’s first-ever gold in the Young Lions Cyber Competition at the 63th annual Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity 2016 in France.

The Young Lions competitions, organised by Media Corp, offer young creative minds from around the world an opportunity to compete and showcase their talent globally. This year’s competition challenged 50 teams of young creatives aged 30 and below representing different nationalities, to create an impactful Cyber campaign for the United Nations to mobilise women and girls around the world to stand up against sexual violence. Cyber competition saw the biggest number of teams competing of all categories such as Young Lions Print, Film, Media, PR and Design. Team competing at Cannes Lions represent the best of the best usually qualified through a national-level competition.

Lim and Ortega broke away from the crowd with their “Break The Silence” campaign that helps victims to report abusers in a secured and easy manner similar to clicking a “Report A Problem” tool within the cyber social space. The creative concept was predicated on the insight that most sexual assault victims know their perpetrators. The challenge is not finding these perpetrators, but having the courage to report them and drive a social movement to eliminate sexual violence.

Ortega said, “We wanted our campaign to be accessible, easy to use and most importantly, safe for women. The “Break The Silence” button accomplishes what we set out to do via social media, allowing women to anonymously report sexual violence and begin the endeavour of bringing the perpetrators to justice. In the long run, it’ll help empower women and put an end to sexual violence.”

Within the same category, the Young Cyber Lions from United Kingdom won Silver and the team from Brazil secured Bronze.

“We are thankful to Mediacorp for supporting us and giving us the opportunity to be here to compete on an international level. It is the most rewarding experience ever,” added by Lim.

Christina Chua, Head of Marketing and Sales Planning, Mediacorp said: “It is a huge honour for the creative industry in Singapore and we are immensely proud of these young talents. The experience of competing against the best was an invaluable opportunity to grow and as the next generation of industry superstars, they will surely be an inspiration to many.”

Participants were briefed onsite at Cannes and given 24 hours to develop a cyber campaign concept before showcasing their big idea in a four-slide presentation to an international jury panel.

Mediacorp as the official country representative of Lions Festival, sponsored three teams to compete in Young Lions Print, Film and Cyber Competition. The three teams of six individuals were chosen to represent Singapore after winning in each respective categories at Mediacorp Young Lions Competition held earlier in April this year. The national competition was co-sponsored by Singapore Airlines, Leo Burnett and Pixta.

The champion duo receives complimentary Festival pass and accommodation at next year’s Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity.
