Screen shot 2010-05-31 at 11.44.05 AM.pngTourism Australia today launched the second phase of the global campaign to promote Australia, created by its global agency partner DDB Sydney.  Designed to invite the world to discover Australia for themselves, the campaign focuses on what is unique and iconic to Australia - its people and its landscape - through online, print and video.

Shot by acclaimed director Michael Gracey, behind the tremendously successful T-mobile campaign and YouTube's most watched commercial, the Evian Roller Babies, the campaign video will connect consumers with Australia's landscapes and people through a song, jointly composed by musician Josh Abrahams and DDB Sydney, which is sung by a variety of Australians amidst various iconic Australian locations.
Jun.jpgJun Fukawa is to join JWT Singapore as ECD, replacing Ali Shabaz who left the agency to join Grey in October 2009.

Fukawa joined JWT Tokyo in 2006, and has since been leading the agency's creative department. Recently the agency won a Cannes Grand Prix for Kit Kat "Mail" in 2009. The campaign also won Gold at Clio last Friday night.

"Jun has a strong vision for where the ad industry is going," said Angus Fraser, Managing Director, JWT Singapore, "His reputation attests to his ability to meet the challenges of the changing landscape and elevate our creative product to the next level. We have huge ambitions for JWT Singapore and I have every bit of confidence the office will prosper under Jun's creative guidance."
Wolf.jpgOgilvy & Mather Hong Kong have unveiled a new global brand campaign for Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts. Entitled "It's in our nature," the new campaign expresses the group's distinctive philosophy of hospitality during the past four decades.

Inspired by conversations with thousands of employees, partners and guests, the campaign focuses on the essence of the Shangri-La culture 'embracing people from the heart and treating them like family'. "What is truly distinctive about the kind of Asian hospitality that Shangri-La offers is our colleagues' genuine care and respect for our guests and each other. For us, this is more important than talking about palatial buildings or beautiful locations, which is why we choose this dramatically different and powerful style of campaign. It conveys the value of genuine kindness, something that is very relevant in today's society," said Greg Dogan, President and CEO of Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts.
Picture 9.pngJWT Tokyo picked up Gold in what has turned out to be a disappointing performance for Asian agencies at this year's Clio Awards. Day two of the festival saw awards handed out in the Content & Contact, Interactive, Innovative Media, Integrated, Radio and Design categories.

JWT Tokyo's Gold Clio came in the Innovative Media category for "Kit Kat Mall". Japanese agencies also picked up two Silver statues (Hakuhodo and Beacon) and two Bronze statues (DDB and Wieden + Kennedy). Asia's only other winners on day two of the festival were Ogilvy Singapore (Silver) and Lowe & Partners Malaysia (Bronze). In total Asia only managed two Gold Statues at Clio this year. Taproot India picked up the other Gold in the Print category for their Colours of India campaign for Conqueror Paper.

CreativeRankingsHeading.jpgAs reported yesterday Dentsu Inc. Tokyo leads all other agencies in the latest Campaign Brief Asia Creative Rankings, which were released this week. Dentsu's excellent performance across the world and the region's most important award shows sees them sitting more than 300 points in front of second placed Saatchi & Saatchi Malaysia. Dentsu rose from 4th last year and Saatchi Malaysia moved up from 5th.

Third place this year went to BBDO Proximity Malaysia, whose "Two Worlds" print work for Chrysler Jeep swept up multiple awards at all the award shows that count in the Creative Rankings. This print campaign is ranked number one in the world by The Gunn Report so it's no wonder BBDO Proximity experienced a huge jump up from last year's 26th position.

Keith-Weed-photo.jpgKEITH WEED, CHIEF MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER, WILL ACCEPT THE AWARD IN CANNES

The organisers of the 57th Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival have announced that this year's prestigious Advertiser of the Year award will be given to the Anglo-Dutch consumer goods giant Unilever, owner of many of the world's best-loved foods, beverages, home and personal care brands.

This important accolade is presented to advertisers who have distinguished themselves for inspiring innovative marketing of their products and who embrace and encourage the creative work produced by their agencies.
CreativeRankingsHeading.jpgFor the first time in the history of the Campaign Brief Asia Creative Rankings a Japanese agency sits at the top of the tree. Following an outstanding all round performance at most of 2009's major award shows Dentsu Inc Tokyo is the most awarded agency in Asia, and Campaign Brief Asia's Regional Agency of the Year.

The traditional rivalry between Singapore's creative powerhouses, Ogilvy & Mather and Saatchi & Saatchi, played second fiddle this year as Dentsu rose up from their consistent fourth and third position of recent years. Dentsu emerged at the top of the rankings earning 1025 Ranking Points in 2009 on top of their 777 Ranking Points in 2008. Their biggest earner for them was London International Awards (270pts), Cannes Lions (205pts), Spikes Asia (160pts) and D&AD (140pts). Impressively Dentsu's award performances were primarily in the Digital, Interactive, Titanium and Cyber categories.

Ogilvy Japan appoint three ECDs

O&MJapan.jpgOgilvy & Mather Japan has appoined Takuya Matsuo, David Morgan and Shingo Ichimura jointly to the role of Executive Creative Director to lead its creative department.

"We had conducted a search for a new ECD after Mark Collis' departure last year. During the interim, we had asked them to act as interim ECD's replacing Mark. During this period, we found that they were natural leaders - each in their own way. And, the combination of these 'three arrows' brings us a diversity of creative skills, with a unity of common interest in doing great work", commented Kent Wertime, OMJ's president.

O&M Shanghai befriends beer drinkers

Tsingtao 2.jpgOgilvy & Mather Advertising Shanghai has launched a fun new series of print ads for Tsingtao beer just in time to greet overseas and domestic visitors to the Shanghai Expo.

Under the slogan "Drink Tsingtao, Understand China", Tsingtao aims to capture the attention and thirst of the international audience by tapping into the Expo's theme of cultural exchange. To keep it fun and light, the creative positions the iconic Chinese beer brand as a cultural ambassador for China and Chinese drinking culture. One advertisement, for example, introduces the Chinese custom of penalizing the late-comer with three beers, as illustrated by a cartoon character balancing three full mugs. Further demonstrating its focus on the overseas demographic, these ads feature English copy rather than Chinese, a rarity among ads launched domestically.

Oktober makes Twisties 'irreTwistable'

Twisties_Comp_1.jpgVisual effects, animation and digital creative convergence studio Oktobor Auckland have created a 60 second fully computer generated TVC for Twisties to be broadcast across Malaysia.

Oktobor Account Director Ganesh Raj explained: "We have had a long and solid relationship with Saatchi & Saatchi Malaysia for some time. For Twisties they approached us earlier than they normally do with a basic concept and asked us to work on the idea."

The idea's concept development fell to Oktobor Animation Director Gary Sullivan who began to expand it into a full-blown celebratory ad.

Learning the mini message

Mini2.jpgFifty years ago, the majority of the Chinese population were riding bicycles. But now it´s becoming THE global player and everybody there loves "bigger, bolder and better". SUV´s and limousines are the cars of choice and the MINI is actually called "the Mistress car." So how do you teach the Chinese consumer, that MINI has been around for 50 years and has a legacy of races won, pop culture and lifestyle? Interone BBDO/Beijing sent the consumers back to school. Literally.

Plastic is dangerous and hard to get rid of

Osama-Board.jpgPlastic is non biodegradable and getting rid of it is not easy. JWT New Delhi personified a plastic bag with the world's most dangerous and irremovable man - Osama Bin Laden.

Made from head to toe using nothing but plastic, this guerilla piece was erected at various public places and cultural centres in Delhi. People were reminded of the dangers plastic does to our world, as does Osama.

Bags made of recycled material were also handed out at the event to provide an alternative to plastic.

CreativeRankingsHeading.jpgUPDATED STORY: Following repeated requests this story has been updated to provide the complete Network Ranking chart. Click on the link below to see where your network ranks.

The Campaign Brief Asia Creative Rankings will hit the streets early next week and all through next week we will preview this year's results on campaignbriefasia.com. Today we are looking at probably the most predictable table in the Creative Rankings - the Network chart.

Having won this for the past seven years it was always going to be Ogilvy & Mather who would again top this section of the Rankings. Over the 2008 and 2009 awards season it was another dominant network performance by Ogilvy, who sit a huge 2805 ranking points in front of their nearest rival. O&M Singapore, O&M Bangkok and O&M Mumbai were again their best performers, and all three agencies sit comfortably in the overall Top 10 in Asia. Ogilvy experienced a good result with their Chinese offices in Shanghai and Beijing. Tokyo also put in an improved performance.
Bob Greenberg.jpgThis year's elite Cannes Titanium and Integrated Jury, which awards breakthrough ideas and the best integrated campaigns, will now be chaired by Bob Greenberg (left), chairman, CEO and global chief creative officer of R/GA. He takes over from Bob Scarpelli (pictured bottom left), DDB Worldwide's chairman and chief creative officer, who contracted an infection and is recovering. However, while he is on the mend, travel is not possible at this time.

Greenberg has been a pioneer in the advertising and communications industry for over three decades. Bob leads the vision for R/GA, an agency that serves as the digital partner for Fortune 500 companies and world-renowned brands including Nike, Johnson & Johnson, L'Oréal Paris, MasterCard, Hewlett-Packard, Nokia and Walmart. The agency has offices in New York, San Francisco, London, Singapore, São Paulo and will soon open in Buenos Aires.

Richard Copping to leave Saatchi Singapore

Richard Copping-thumb-250x298-10175.jpgSaatchi & Saatchi Singapore/Malaysia head of art, Richard Copping has resigned. Copping joined Saatchi & Saatchi in Singapore in 2004 after stints at BBDO and Bates. He was promoted to ECD in 2008 but late last year took on the Head of Art role when Adrian Miller became ECD after both the Malaysian and Singapore offices were merged to a single operating structure. Subsequent to Miller's decision to resign, Saatchi has hired Bruce Matchett from Ogilvy Sydney to take on the ECD role.

Saatchi & Saatchi Regional ECD Andy Greenaway confirmed Copping's departure saying: "Ritchie's been a great servant to us and a great hire for anyone that hires him. I will sorely miss him. He's one of the best creative guys I've worked with: talented, hard working, loyal and willing to embrace the new world."
AdFest.jpgAdFest has once again become a victim of the political unrest in Thailand. As a result of foreign embassy closures including the Japanese Embassy in Bangkok, the AdFest team has been unable to obtain their passport and visas out of the embassy to fly to Tokyo to handle the judging arrangements, planned for 24-28 May 2010.

Says Vinit Suraphongchai, Chairman of the Working Committee, "We are determined to ensure that the Lotus Awards judging takes place, despite all the obstacles we have faced this year and I would like to thank everyone who has been so patient and understanding in this difficult time for AdFest and the people of Thailand."

CreativeRankingsHeading.jpgThe latest Campaign Brief Asia Creative Rankings will start hitting desks in Asia mid next week. Make sure you are a subscriber to Campaign Brief Asia or contact the local country stockist of Campaign Brief Asia.

This year's Creative Rankings fills a special 36 page feature in the new edition.

The Creative Rankings chart the performances of the 161 agencies that have won creative awards over the past two years. It also ranks the 1493 individual copywriters and art directors that have won awards over the past two years.

This year the Creative Rankings tables have a new agency and creative filling the Number One positions. In fact there has been some massive changes in both Rankings. To whet your appetite, later this week we will start providing highlights from this year's Creative Rankings via this website.

Here's what's included in the 36 page Creative Rankings feature:

A decade of digital: 10 things for 2010

Faris Yakob.jpgFaris Yakob is the chief innovation officer, MDC Partners, holding company of ad agencies including Crispin Porter + Bogusky and kirshenbaum bond senecal + partners and the former EVP Chief Technology Strategist at McCann Erickson NY. Campaign Brief had the pleasure of meeting Faris in Las Vegas at the judging of last year's London International Awards where he was the inaugural President of the jury for The NEW Category. This year he will return to again head the NEW Category judging. This is an article he recently wrote for the Marketing Society in the UK.

A decade of digital: 10 things for 2010

A decade has flown by since Y2K arrived without a bug and digital marketing has grown up alongside it.

The emergence of a new media system is typified by a period of transposition, where the behavioural grammar of the previous system remains dominant. The first television shows were radio shows with people talking directly into camera. The first films were stageplays that had been filmed. And the first marketing forays online took what we knew about media and branding from broadcast media and applied it to a whole new space.

But digital is different...
Picture 3.pngThe YouTube Young Lions 48 Hour Ad Contest was completed over last weekend. Young creatives had two days to write and film a commercial for Water Aid showing the plight of those who don't have safe drinking water. Making the video is just half the job. Entrants have one week (17 - 23 May) to drive as many people to their YouTube video as possible. Embed it, blog about it, tweet it - whatever it takes to get people voting.

A panel of advertising industry experts will then pick two separate winners, taking into account the public votes. The winners will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the festival, from 20 - 26 June, where they will compete as Team YouTube at the Young Lions Film Competition. This is Rudy La Faber's video. La Faber is a 24 year old copywriter at Dentsu Malaysia. All the entries can be seen here.

'Art & Copy' now available on DVD

Picture 1050.pngThe One Club's critically acclaimed documentary 'Art & Copy' is now available on DVD from PBS. The film, which was screened in Australia earlier this month, gives an inside look at the world of advertising and profiles some of the most influential advertising creatives of our time--those people who have profoundly impacted our culture, yet are virtually unknown outside their industry.

They are kept in cages no bigger than these abandoned monorail structures littered around Jakarta and are sold, dead or alive, on the black market. Well-known as conceptual photographers, David Lindsey Wade and Lyndon Wade recently began directing commercials and are frequently tasked with crafting all of a campaign's components.

Wade1.jpgTheir highly-acclaimed work for edgy British fashion company Fly53, for example, encompasses still photos for print advertising, broadcast commercials, and long-form videos for social networking sites, Fly53 microsites and fashion trade fairs plus POS materials for Fly53 stockists worldwide.

"Campaigns now need to rely on many different kinds of media and marketers are asking, 'how can we bundle production?' to yield print, motion and viral content all at once," says Lyndon.  "For a successful outcome clients need a single creative team with one goal: to develop a cohesive approach to delivering all media efficiently and cost effectively.  Fielding different teams for different media just doesn't work as well."

AdFest jury now to meet in Tokyo

AF10.jpgThe long delayed judging of the 2010 AdFest Lotus Awards will take place from 24-28th May in Tokyo, Japan. AdFest considered several different cities across the Asia Pacific, but ultimately Tokyo proved to be the most suitable choice for the relocation of this year's Jury session, which includes more than 50 judges.

AdFest prides itself on being the region's 1st major awards festival every year. The agencies that win at AdFest usually go on to shine globally, and this year will be no different - regardless of the fact that our Jury Panel will meet in Japan this year, rather than Thailand," says AdFest President Jimmy Lam.

Reebok.jpgSaatchi & Saatchi Tokyo created this novel campaign for Reebok Taikan by starting a rumour that a traditional exercise TV program, which every Japanese grew up with and was forced to endure in schools and at work, was planning to launch a new version. This became a huge deal in Japan because they haven't changed the program since the war. Naturally, it got on the news in every major newspaper and network. They went into stage two by starting another rumor that someone got a hold of the video and was going to air it on YouTube on April 1st.
