The film ‘Discover Your City’ by BBH China illustrates Google Translate’s key instant translation features – using augmented reality and artificial intelligence to allow users to speak and translate languages quickly and easily in real time.

The film stars hip hop artist MC Jin discovering trendy areas around Shanghai and Wuzhen by easily capturing and translating English words he sees and hears along the way – all in real time. Translations were filmed live on set via the augmented reality feature Words Lens without having to use any special effects in post-production

Kelly Pon, Executive Creative Director, BBH China said, “Authenticity is very important to us. We wanted to feature an existing user of Google Translate and found MC Jin to be an advocate. In the film, MC Jin was translating words in his daily life in the most authentic and fun way. We hope that people will be inspired to discover the world around them with the app. It was also paramount that everything was captured in-camera to showcase how the AI works. That in itself was a challenge. Filming with AI — a medium that is constantly learning — is an interesting obstacle to overcome during a shoot.”

Yi-Bing Zhang, Product Marketing Manager, Google China added, “Google Translate is one of our most beloved products worldwide. We are excited to introduce the app version to Chinese consumers and let them discover a world without language barriers.”
