LampPost01.jpgIn celebration of Singapore’s 52nd National Day, The LampPost Project by DDB Singapore, has launched a unique collection of commemorative up-cycled tote bags. Its debut range features simple, lightweight, practical and unique bags that are made from recycled lamppost banners and flags produced for the occasion each year.

Giving the banners a new lease of life, each bag is individually cut and hand stitched by the LOOMs Artisans at social enterprise, The LOOMS Workshops, and clients at voluntary welfare organisation SAMH (Singapore Association for Mental Health). While no two bags are identical, they all carry within them the same promise that the profit earned from their sale goes towards making life a little brighter for the people who make them. Under the hashtag #DogoodLookgoodFeelgood, the project endeavours to make supporters not only look good about their purchase, but also feel good in the process.

The initiative, conceived by a group of designers aiming to create useful, eco-friendly souvenirs to commemorate special occasions, includes a five-part production process.

LampPost bags.jpgAfter being sorted to select the most striking graphics, the discarded banners are collected and distributed to the Singapore charity and social enterprise that run tailoring outfits. At the workshops, the banners are cut, patterned and stitched into LampPost bags by skilled craftspeople. Each piece is then individually labelled and packaged for sale, and, once sold, the profits returned to the makers of the LampPost bag.

“We like to imagine that a LampPost bag gives new meaning to the word ‘lifestyle’,” said Sharon Goh, associate creative director at DDB Group Singapore. “Firstly, each bag helps to improve the ‘life’ of the person that made it, and, secondly, represents the ultimate street-‘style’ accessory as it actually comes from the streets of Singapore. Add the two parts together, and a LampPost bag carries more meaning than any other designer bag.”

DDB Singapore has joined hands with Club21 to launch the inaugural range. Going forward, the agency will be looking to add more brands and retail partners to support the growing initiative.
