Kam Fan Awards 2014: Leo Burnett Hong Kong takes out the Grand Kam Fan for The Salvation Army/Crown Relocations “Gift Box”

Crown_Gift Box.jpgPenguin.jpgLeo Burnett and McCann Worldgroup were the stars of the show at this year’s Hong Kong 4As Kam Fan Awards, held tonight at the Convention and Exhibition Center in Hong Kong. It was the 30th anniversary of the awards presentation.

The night of nights for the Hong Kong industry turned into a shoot out between the two agencies with Leo Burnett’s “Gift Box” for The Salvation Army/Crown Relocations narrowly edging out McCann Worldgroup’s Solvil et Titus “Penguin” tvc for the best of show award – the Grand Kam Fan.

After two rounds of final voting for the Grand Kam Fan award the decision on a winner was equally split with each concept gaining 3 votes each. In the end, following several re-voting rounds, it was left to Kam Fan jury chairman, Akira Kagami, to take on responsibility to decide the eventual winner.

“Gift Box” and “Penguin” were also awarded Kam Fan (best of the best in the category) gongs as well as 2 Gold awards each.

Kagami commented that “contestants are really strong this year, which the Jury found difficult to compare which one is better. We chose the Grand Kam Fan for its message to the industry that can encourage & inspire, especially the younger generation. This winning work is a very good idea that can move the people and change the world.”

In terms of overall awards McCann Worldgroup was the dominant agency with 1 Kam Fan, 3 Gold, 10 Silver and 19 Bronze awards.

In addition to the Grand Kam Fan, Leo Burnett’s total was 1 Kam Fan, 2 Gold, 2 Silver and 4 Bronze.

Faber Castell_Iceberg.jpgOgilvy & Mather was also a great performer on the night, walking away with 2 Gold, 2 Silver and 11 Bronze awards.

Ogilvy won Gold in the Digital category for Orbis “Don’t Look Away” and for Faber-Castell “Iceberg” (pictured) in the Print Craft category. The Orbis website was an entire site experience that can only be activated by sight via a webcam.

Cheil Worldwide was also a Gold winner this year. Their 2 Gold awards were both for Life Nutrition “Reversible Barcode” (pictured below). They also scored 6 Bronze awards.

“Reversible Barcode” is a barcode that can reverse the environmental impact of every purchase. When the barcode is reversed and extra dollar is charged and donated to environmental protection group, Greeners Action.

Other award winners were DDB Hong Kong (3 Silver, 1 Bronze), JWT Hong Kong (2 Bronze) Dentsu Aegis (1 Bronze) and Curious Few (1 Bronze)

This year’s Kam Fan Jury was led by Akira Kagami (Executive Advisor of Drill Inc., Japan), an advertising legend in himself, with a panel consisting of Elvis Chau (Partner/ ECD of Anomaly Shanghai), Endy Fung (Story Barista of Storybusi, Shanghai), Graham Kelly (Former Regional Executive Creative Director of Isobar Asia Pacific, Singapore), Allen Lee (Group Creative Director of United Advertising, Taiwan), Ted Lim (Regional Chief Creative Officer of Dentsu Aegis Network, South-East Asia) and Stefan Schmidt (Founder and Creative Director of dieckertschmidt, Berlin.)

This year was the star-studded 30th anniversary of the Kam Fan awards and the evening was packed with elated winners, gleaming celebrities, business luminaries, and ad veterans such as Ronnie Ling (Founder of Ling-McCann HK), Tateo Mataki, (Senior Corporate Advisor, Dentsu Japan), Leonie Ki, Lo Sheung Yan (Ma Yan), Eunice Lam, Philip Tse, David Tsui, Jimmy Lam, Cecil Yow, some of whom have come back from overseas to attend the event.

This year, the HK4As continues to receive the sponsorship from Create Hong Kong Office of the HKSAR for the Kam Fan winners to compete and attend International Ad shows, namely Cannes Festival in France, AdFest in Thailand and Spikes Asia in Singapore.
