SOAG_20130227_032.jpgMulti-award winning director and writer Julius Avery has just signed with Curious Film.

Avery was earmarked as one of Australia’s most original filmmakers when his short film Jerrycan won the Cannes Jury Prize in 2008. In the same year he won the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Short Film, with Honorable Mentions at Sundance and the Berlin International Film Festival.

SOAG_20130318_033.jpgOver the past 12 months, he has been directing his first feature film – the highly anticipated crime thriller called Son of a Gun, which opens nationally on 16th October and stars Ewan McGregor.

Says Peter Grasse, executive producer, Curious: “Julius is not only an accomplished filmmaker but a talented commercial director, so we are proud to have him join son_of_a_gun_xlg copy.jpgthe Curious roster.”

Avery has directed campaigns for Transport Accident Commission (TAC), Sony, Rabo Direct, and the Royal Australian Navy. At Curious, he teams up with award-winning producer Matt Reeder, whose most recent feature ‘The Little Death’ premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2014.

As a 16 year-old art student Avery began following his friends around with a camera, a habit that led to the creation of his first film, End of Town, directed while graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts. End of Town won the Melbourne International Film Festival’s emerging filmmaker of the year award and was the first of many works examining the Australian psyche. He also won an Australian Directors Guild Award for best direction in 2007.

Son of a Gun will screen in cinemas nationally this Thursday, 16th October. It tells the story of a young man who is taken under the wing of a notorious criminal (Ewan McGregor) but quickly discovers protection comes at a price.
