Gary Caulfield resigns as ECD at Ogilvy Indonesia
Gary Caulfield, Ogilvy & Mather Indonesia’s Group Executive Creative Director, has resigned from the Agency after nine successful years and will leave in November to take a short break from the industry. He leaves, at a high point in the Agency’s creative history, having had the most successful performance at Cannes in 2011.
Other successes in 2011 include winning Global and Effectiveness Awards for Nestle, a first for Indonesia. The Agency also has three finalists in the upcoming London International Awards as well as strong acceptances in Campaign Brief’s The Work 2011.
Caulfield (above) also led the team to win the Campaign Brief Asia’s title of Agency of the Year for three consecutive years from 2006 to 2008.
This announcement comes on the back of yesterday’s news that Stephen Mangham was also leaving the agency – just a month after transferring from the Singapore office. It’s been a turbulent management time at Ogilvy Indonesia with Caulfield working with seven different Managing Directors and five different Heads of Country during his nine years at Ogilvy.
“Working at Ogilvy Indonesia has been the highlight of my career to date,” said Gary Caulfield. “It’s been a challenging and extremely rewarding experience and I have thoroughly enjoyed my part in positioning Ogilvy Indonesia as the ‘creative powerhouse’ in the country. I’ve been lucky to have hired and trained some extremely talented Indonesian ‘Creative’s’ during the years and I am very proud to see them grow within the Agency and the industry.”
Ogilvy’s Regional Creative President, Eugene Cheong, paid tribute to Caulfield’s contribution to the Indonesian office: “Gary laid the foundation of our Jakarta office, on which we can build a world-class agency. He quite literally dragged our Indonesian operation from third world to first world. He has been a teacher and mentor to countless young Indonesian creative and a great guy to have a beer with after a hard day in the trenches.”
Prior to joining Ogilvy & Mather Indonesia, Caulfield worked in Australia and Singapore, the latter as Global Creative Director for Singapore Airlines at Batey Ads. Previously he held the role of Global Creative Director for Acer Computers at Leo Burnett.

This is very bad for us, Gary is very important being here for 9 years. Management changes all the time. Gary should get more support form mr KhaiMeng.
I trust you man
You left big shoes to fill Gary.
Doubt any ‘creative technical advisor’ parachuting in from Singapore has the chops to achieve what you did.
This is a blow to Ogilvy.
Gary was the one consistent force at the agency. He’s put his heart and soul into the agency. He knows, loves and is dedicated to the market. He even knows how to speak the language.
Clients there respect him, which is more than can be said about the agency MDs. If his plan is to stay in the market then ogilvy will loose business to whichever agency he joins or starts up.
Well all I can say is Ogilivy will not ever find another like Gary.
I have known him for nearly 35 years and apart from his fantastic work in his field, a better more dedicated genuine man you will not find.
I agree with Indo expat…they will loose business…this man is one in amillion
Wish Gaz all the best in what ever he chooses….
Why?!!!!
Seems like a guy who has striven heart and soul in contributing to an agency….. If people like Eugene & Kai realize that then where’s the loyalty and recognition in return?
Sad sad day if this wasn’t
Garys decision.
He leaves, at a high point in the Agency’s creative history, having had the most successful performance at Cannes in 2011.
What does that mean? 3 Finalist? Wait a minute, did they win metal at Cannes?
Didn’t Lowe Indonesia win Metals in Awards shows?
Ogilvy has one of the most bloated creative departments in Asia. WPP has not met its targets this year due to the financial mess the world is in. So it doesnt take a genius to figure what happens next. Anyone who is seen as just hanging around will be pushed. At least in the old days there was Ian’s shophouse where all the expats would land up.
Ogilvy is a snakepit. Where all the snakes have been killed by venomous scorpions. From Chernobyl.
If you do not manage to put Khai’s name – and now Eugene’s – on some major metal each year, you are toast. Radioactive toast.
He did well to hang on for as long as he did. Good on him and best of luck out there.
I produced Gary’s first commercial (Honda: Lintas Melbourne 1991) he was brilliant to work with then and I have enjoyed his friendship ever since. Gary is one of a kind and so much more than just another passionate ECD.
This is Ogilvy’s loss.
I’m looking forward to applauding Gary’s success in his next gig.
I’m sure everyone has ever worked with him will sincerely wish Gary all the best in the future. He was like a father and a great mentor for Ogilvy Jakarta more than a boss. A great man with a huge heart to match. We love you, Gary. Stay gold.
Cheers Gary!!
